PTFE Membrane Filtration for Liquid and Gas Duty
We select filter media around the process conditions, rather than treating every PTFE membrane as interchangeable. A water-based liquid needs a wetting route, while a gas cartridge needs a clear flow basis and a gas path that stays open.
Aqueous Liquid Filtration
The ECP series of products is designed for filtration of aqueous solutions and process liquids, and therefore uses a hydrophilic PTFE membrane. Review other aqueous and organic solutions for their intended filtration service, and assess the complete cartridge for chemical compatibility.
Specifications
- Candidate ratings: 0.22 and 0.45 µm
- Record fluid composition and required cleanliness
- Check whether wetting-agent residues are acceptable
Solvents and Process Liquids
For the chemical industries, we review hydrophobic PTFE membrane filter cartridges for filtration of compatible organic solvents and process liquids. It may be necessary to pre-wet the membrane for aqueous liquid duty; in this case, the fluid used for pre-wetting and flushing should be evaluated for compatibility, as well as residue limits.
Specifications
- Include acids, alkalis and solvent mixtures in the review
- Check every wetted component
- Separate clean pressure drop from the operating limit
Process Gas and Tank Vents
Hydrophobic PTFE membrane cartridges are candidates for air and gas filtration, including tank breathing. Condensate can block the gas path, so hot or humid vent service needs a condensate-management review as well as a membrane choice.
Specifications
- State gas flow rates and reference conditions
- Include humidity, steam exposure and drain arrangement
- Review drying after wet integrity testing
PTFE Wetting Check
Although many factors affect the selection of a membrane, the basic conditions, such as phase and liquid wettability, need to be evaluated first.
ECOFILTRONE PTFE Filter Cartridge Series
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the membrane material across our five series, which have distinct support constructions. PTFE’s chemical resistance is not a substitute for checking polypropylene hardware and seals against your process liquid; the catalogue configuration below is the starting point for that review.
ECBTG: Hydrophobic PTFE
We provide the ECBTG product with hydrophobic PTFE membrane media and a PP support element for review in compatible process filtration. This membrane is a candidate for filtration under compatible process conditions.
- Removal ratings: 0.1, 0.22, 0.45, 1, 3, 5 and 10 µm
- Maximum working temperature: 80°C
- Indicate the required rating for the liquid or gas duty.
ECPTG: Gas and Liquid Ratings
We can provide ECPTG with hydrophobic PTFE and oxidation-resistant polypropylene. Listed ratings for this series are provided separately for liquids and gases, therefore phase differentiation for specification review is explicit.
- Liquid rating: 0.22 µm
- Gas rating: 0.01 µm
- Maximum working temperature: 80°C
ECPT: Double Membrane
We supply ECPT with a double hydrophobic PTFE membrane and PP components. The 0.22 + 0.22 µm notation describes the two-layer configuration; it does not become a 0.44 µm rating.
- Double-layer rating: 0.22 + 0.22 µm
- Maximum working temperature: 80°C
- Confirm the retention basis for the intended duty
ECPTFE: Higher Working Temperature
We supply ECPTFE with hydrophobic PTFE and high-temperature resistant PP hardware. Its 100°C working-temperature limit differs from the 80°C limit of the other four series.
- Liquid rating: 0.22 µm; gas rating: 0.01 µm
- Maximum differential pressure: 5.2 bar at 20°C; 2.4 bar at 80°C
- Obtain the pressure limit for duty at 100°C
ECP: Hydrophilic PTFE
Hydrophilic PTFE and PP components can be provided in our ECP series for selection of aqueous liquids. Define the particles to remove when evaluating filtration performance and fluid type. Consider ratings in the product data sheet.
- Removal ratings: 0.22 and 0.45 µm
- Maximum working temperature: 80°C
- Catalogue heat-treatment conditions differ from the hydrophobic series
Another Operating Condition
Provide us a part number, data sheet or sample details if the existing cartridge does not correspond to any of the products in our catalog. We will assess the possible alternatives and customizations based on the operating conditions and housing constraints.
- Keep the original specification and required test basis
- Include maximum temperature and pressure excursions
- Identify media-contact and seal requirements
End-Cap and Seal Matching
We match a replacement to the filter housing as well as the membrane requirement. Similar cartridge length does not establish a sealing fit; interface geometry, seal material and operating chemistry must agree.

PTFE Cartridge Technical Specifications
We supply a pleated filter cartridge with a PTFE membrane within the model-specific limits below. Pressure limits change with temperature: a room-temperature differential-pressure rating is not interchangeable with the hot-duty limit.
Catalogue Selection Matrix
| Series | Removal Rating without a Stated Phase | Explicit Liquid Rating | Explicit Gas Rating | Maximum Working Temperature | Maximum Differential Pressure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECBTG | 0.1 / 0.22 / 0.45 / 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 µm | Confirm duty | Confirm duty | 80°C | 4.0 bar at 20°C; 2.0 bar at 80°C |
| ECPTG | — | 0.22 µm | 0.01 µm | 80°C | 4.0 bar at 20°C; 2.0 bar at 80°C |
| ECPT | 0.22 + 0.22 µm, double membrane | Confirm duty | Confirm duty | 80°C | 4.0 bar at 20°C; 2.0 bar at 80°C |
| ECPTFE | — | 0.22 µm | 0.01 µm | 100°C | 5.2 bar at 20°C; 2.4 bar at 80°C |
| ECP | 0.22 / 0.45 µm | Confirm duty | Liquid selection only; gas rating not listed | 80°C | 4.0 bar at 20°C; 2.0 bar at 80°C |
| All five series | 69 mm outer diameter, approximately 2.72 in; catalogue lengths 5–40 inches | Confirm the exact length, interface and seal configuration | |||
Steam and Heat-Treatment Conditions
| Series | Catalogue Method | Temperature / Duration | Catalogue Cycles |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECBTG | Autoclave and steam-in-place | 135°C / 30 minutes | 30 |
| ECPTG | Steam-in-place | 135°C / 30 minutes | 150 |
| ECPT | Steam-in-place | 135°C / 30 minutes | 150 |
| ECPTFE | Steam-in-place | 135°C / 30 minutes | 150 |
| ECP | Autoclave and steam-in-place | 125°C / 30 minutes | 15 |
These heat-treatment conditions are separate from the maximum working temperature. A cycle count is not a substitute for validating repeated use in your process; confirm the complete assembly, procedure and acceptance criteria before sterilization.
Flow and Retention Basis
For a high flow rate, the cartridge, the fluid viscosity and the pressure limitations must be assessed. The construction of the pleat alone does not determine flow capacity.
- Liquid flow: medium, temperature, viscosity and target throughput
- Gas flow: gas identity, reference pressure/temperature and humidity
- retention: state the objective, challenge and required performance.

Compare Cost over the Actual Duty
When assessing a process, compare the total cost of ownership. Consider the cost of the system, the energy to operate the system, and the waste generated and disposed of by the system. Add the cost of system downtime due to process changeout.
- Consider the total cost of ownership of a process when assessing service life.
- Track clean pressure drop and its change during service
- Separate process changes from filter loading when determining service life.
Configuration Review and Product Documentation
We provide technical data, material documentation and applicable compliance documents according to the product and application. ECOFILTRONE™ coordinates specification verification, inspection requirements and order documentation so that the ordered cartridge, supplied documents and intended use agree. Using only a nominal micron value leaves a validation gap because it does not identify the challenge method, operating conditions or acceptance criteria.
- Confirm series, rating, dimensions, end caps and seals
- Check operating, cleaning and thermal exposure conditions
- Agree the inspection scope and requested document format
- Review sample or trial requirements with the target application
- We coordinate technical confirmation and datasheets or drawings
- We follow production, inspection, packaging and shipping requirements
- We support installation and replacement compatibility
- We review operating performance, pressure trends and troubleshooting inputs
Match the test method to the duty. A hydrophobic vent filter and a wetted liquid filter require different preparation and test conditions; temperature, test pressure and the approved method belong in the specification.[5]
- For sterile filtration, require product- and process-specific validation
- ASTM F838 is a bacterial-retention test method for membrane filters used in liquid filtration. It is not a test method for gases.
- An ECPTG enquiry must distinguish 0.22 µm liquid duty from 0.01 µm gas duty
- Always ensure test limits pertain to the process under consideration and the cartridge.
How We Work: PTFE Duty Review and Cartridge Supply
-
01
Part of our job is to identify the medium, required phase, concentration and filtration objective.

PTFE Duty Passport
Centralize your enquiry inputs on material, phase, concentration, temperature, flow, inlet and outlet pressures, filtration objective, cartridge dimensions, connection and seal, cleaning, exposure and quantity. Summarize the specification conditions.
PTFE Cartridge Gallery for Replacement Matching
Use the product views with your existing datasheet and housing drawing to identify the details we need from your current cartridge. We review both end caps and overall dimensions against the housing; a similar outer cage does not establish an interchangeable cartridge.
-
01
Photograph the current reference or label
-
02
Measure the complete cartridge, including the locating end
-
03
Record the housing model and existing seal material
PTFE Selection Limits and Alternatives
Select the membrane for the separation function. Mis-selection may result in insufficient flow and exposure of support components to process conditions and chemicals beyond specification.
-
The hydrophilic PTFE membrane can be wetted directly with water. Use of hydrophobic PTFE may be inappropriate where approved pre-wetting and flushing cannot meet process requirements.
-
PTFE membrane resistance does not establish the compatibility of all P.P. end caps or elastomers. For that duty, an alternative complete cartridge system may be required.
-
Excessive load of process solids may consume the service life of the membrane. A depth or high flow cartridge may be employed for a separate particle removal task.
-
Compare PES or PVDF against the chemical compatibility, extractables and acceptance criteria for each application. Determination of pore size does not establish sterile process suitability or justify a change of membrane.

PTFE Filter Cartridge Ordering Questions
Should I choose hydrophobic or hydrophilic PTFE for water-based liquid?
Hydrophilic ECPs can be used for direct aqueous liquid contact. A hydrophobic ptfe membrane filter may require an approved route for pre-wetting and flushing; check the route and the compatibility of the fluid with all the process components.
Can a hydrophobic cartridge handle organic solvents?
A hydrophobic PTFE filter may be suitable for compatible solvent filtration. Send the solvent solution at the required concentration and temperature for review of the membrane, PP support components, end caps and seals.
Does the 0.01 µm gas rating apply to liquids?
No. ECPTG and ECPTFE list 0.01 µm for gas and 0.22 µm for liquid; specify the phase and request the relevant challenge method, efficiency and flow basis.
Does a 0.2 or 0.22 µm pore rating guarantee sterile filtration?
No. Sterile process suitability requires validation for the cartridge, product and operating conditions, including the relevant retention and integrity-test relationship; pore size alone does not establish it.[4]
What does the ECPT 0.22 + 0.22 µm rating mean?
It describes a double-membrane construction with two listed 0.22 µm layers. Do not add the values or treat the notation as an independently established gas or liquid efficiency result.
Can ECPTFE operate continuously at the steam-treatment temperature?
No: the maximum operating temperature of the ECPTFE membrane cartridge is 100°C. Its catalogue maximum working temperature is 100°C, while steam-in-place is listed separately at 135°C for 30 minutes.
Which pressure limit should I use for a hot process?
Confirm the operating constraints and limits of the system at the specified operating temperature. ECPTFE lists 5.2 bar at 20°C and 2.4 bar at 80°C; request the applicable limit for any other temperature, including 100°C. Send the maximum allowable temperature of the system.
Can a hydrophobic vent filter become blocked by condensate?
Yes. Water on the membrane can obstruct the gas path even when the membrane remains hydrophobic; review the vent’s humidity, condensate drainage, thermal arrangement and required breathing flow.[3]
How do I specify a replacement cartridge?
Include part reference, datasheet, dimensional drawings and pictures of both ends, along with the specific medium, temperature, flow and inlet and outlet pressures. For seal material, mention the type. If the cartridge design is single open end, show the locating feature and O-ring position; for a double open end design, show both sealing surfaces and any housing adapters.
Which information is needed to quote a PTFE cartridge?
Include the series or intended duty, rating, length, end caps, seals, quantity, destination and document requirements. We respond to quotation inquiries within 24 hours; use the PTFE Duty Passport to assemble the technical details.
Are samples and trial orders available?
Free samples are available; the customer pays freight. Trial orders are accepted, and lead time is confirmed in the quotation.
